Wayne NGAN (1937 - 2020)

Yukon black tea bowl

Hornby Island, BC; c. 1990’s; 4 5/8” wide.

$500 (CAD)

Wayne Ngan produced a wide variety of tea bowls, but this shape could be considered his most classic. With a high foot and round waist, it recalls the Mashiko ware pots that inspired Ngan so much. Glazed in a deep black, Ngan developed this glaze from a sample of clay brought to him from a riverbank in the Yukon Territory. After much refining, he developed an elegant black which tended to accentuate Ngan’s forms. This tea bowl shows the occasional pitting Ngan was able to achieve - similar to a Shino’s orange peel texture.
