Wayne NGAN (1937 - 2020)
Tenmoku tea bowl
Hornby Island, BC; c. 2000’s; 4” wide.
$400 (CAD)
Wayne Ngan’s practice was influenced by many Asian ceramics traditions. But perhaps the strongest was the pull of the Leach-Hamada school. This tea bowl features a classic tenmoku glaze found in many Mashiko ware post-war ceramics, especially those of Shoji Hamada. But the strong yet elegant angles and curves are pure Ngan. His later works explored the sculptural possibilities of pottery, and Ngan injected even his smallest his pieces with a robust energy.
