Tasuku MITSUFUJI (1962 - )
"赤絵酒杯” Aka-e guinomi 1
Asago, Hyogo; 2024; 2 1/2” wide by 1 1/2” tall.
$150 (CAD)
This small, delicate cup by Mitsufuji Tasuku is turned from porcelain, covered with a very light ash-glaze, and decorated with stark iron-red calligraphy characters. The rim features touches of iron-brown glaze that breaks and flows down the inside of each cup.
Mitsufuji wood-fired this cup in his anagama kiln. I love wood-fired porcelain: the contrast of refined porcelain with the vagaries of anagama kiln firing is both delicate and organic. This sake cup is turned quite thin and the foot is trimmed in elegant proportion to the cup.
Some kiln effects can be seen on one side, describing the direction of the flame. While on the opposite side and inside the cup’s bowl, the glaze crazing reminds me of the delicate crackle found in celadon glazes.
This small cups is the perfect size for not only sake but also steeped Chinese teas or wine. It fits just right between a thumb and finger, and the slightly curved and flared rim is made to rest perfectly against the lip with each sip.
Comes with the signed, stamped, and titled wood box, stamped wrapping cloth, and CV.
