Shinobu KAWASE (1950 -)
“青磁輪花鉢” celadon flower rim bowl
Oiso, Kanazawa; c. 1980’s; 8 7/8” wide by 2 1/4” high.
$1,500 (CAD)
This bowl by Shinobu Kawase features a very refined and elegant shape, inspired by Song dynasty Ru wares. The earliest phase of his career saw him focus on producing “tributes” to the classic celadons of this era, in an effort to absorb and embody what is generally accepted as the best celadons ever produced. To say the lore and mystery of ceramics from this time and place hold a strong influence over the practice of celadon makers today is an understatement. Song celadons are the canon to which all other celadons are compared.
From a very low foot, Kawase’s bowl swells with a fullness like an opening flower. It even appears to slump just slightly over the foot, adding to its organic shape. The lobes flare gently at the lip where they expand into evenly spaced “petals.” The glaze is thinnest at the rim, breaking to reveal the iron-rich clay body below. And Kawase’s glazing is solid, without crazing. Even though it is the distinct blue-grey of Ru ware, it somehow still appears warm.
Kawase’s bowl captures the magic of Ru wares. With these early works, you can see him incorporate celadon’s history into his practice. The simple and classic forms and glazes laid the foundation for his later work. As abstract and organic as that later work might become, you can still recognize the touchstone of Song ceramics.
Comes with the signed, stamped, and titled wood box, and stamped wrapping cloth.
