Shingo TAKEUCHI (1955 -)

“象嵌壷” Zogan inlay large tsubo

Seto, Aichi; 2006. 9 1/4” high by 9 1/8” wide by 6 1/8” deep

$1,500 (CAD)

This coil-built stoneware vessel by Shingo Takeuchi was made with his signature iron-rich clay - a mix of slightly groggy Shigaraki and Seto clays. Hand construction allowed him to achieve this wildly organic shape with multiple planes and curves. There is nothing like a Takeuchi pot.

He covered his surface using a zogan or inlay technique similar to mishima. Carving a pattern into the leather hard surface, Takeuchi then pressed a cream coloured slip into the lines after a bisque firing. Once dry, he protected each line with a thin coating of wax before applying the pink and blue pigments to the surface. Then, the entire pot was covered with a matte slip of rice husk ash. After the reduction high-firing Takeuchi used a stiff wire brush to remove the top layer, revealing the protected pigments underneath.

What results is a fantastically rhythmic pot. The form dances and the surface vibrates. Takeuchi’s vessel could be a colourful sea creature at the bottom of a deep tidal pool. Or just an elegant sculpture made of colourful lines and curves.

Comes with the signed, stamped, and titled wood box, stamped wrapping cloth, and CV.
