Very pleased to offer this wood-fired vase by Vancouver based ceramicist Michelle Grimm. A former Artist in Residence at Deer Lake at The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Michelle has a talent for atmospheric firings and this vase is particularly good example.

The Shadbolt kiln’s wood-firing effects play around all sides of this piece leaving a record of the flame. The rich browns and greys are similar to the Bizen and Tamba wares from the hills west of Osaka. When a pot is left unglazed and wood-fired, the variations of colour and matte surface often remind me of rock; this firing truly honours the stoneware clay body.

Michelle Grimm is originally from Maryland, and after bouncing around the globe, eventually settled in Vancouver. She studied Interior Design at the Visual College of Art and Design and has won several international design awards. Michelle settled on ceramics a number of years ago and has been passionately honing her craft ever since.
