Masayuki URAGUCHI (1964 -)
“青瓷一輪差” celadon one-flower vase
Haga, Tochigi; 1993. 4 1/2” high by 3 3/8” wide.
$525 (CAD)
What I find most interesting about this piece is the shape combined with the glaze. With its short neck, flaring mouth, and swelling, slightly irregular body - that almost slumps over the foot - the form is reminiscent of Ido or Korean influenced vases. That shape is more common to rustic Korean forms and Ido glazes, but the addition of a very refined celadon is a nice contrast. The very simple crazing lines, highlighted in a brown-mauve tone, hug this piece, almost like veins on any leaf or flower that is placed in this vase.
Also interesting to note is that inside the lid, beside his signature and stamp, Uraguchi wrote “平成五年” which is Heisei 5, or the year 1993. Unusual for most potters, Uraguchi often dated his earlier works. As well, the very soft blue of the celadon, and the iridescent iron of the clay body underneath, are both qualities common to his very early work.
Comes with the signed, stamped, and titled wood box.
