An advantage of John Reeve's various location marks is that it allows for relatively accurate dating of his work. One of Reeve’s many stints at other potters’ studios included a couple of years at Herman Venema’s Pottery during 1972 and 1973. He potted at home in Mission but then fired at Venema’s kiln. This teapot has many of Reeve’s signature touches: the asymmetric body, angled throwing lines, and delicately pinched spout. Add to that the sugar bowl's trifoliate form, and you have a classic Reeve set. Both pieces are thrown quite delicately, making for a light teapot that takes into account the added weight once it’s filled with water.
The teapot has a couple of very small glaze chips along a hairline crack, both of which have been restored by the Kintsugi artist Naoko Fukumaru. Naoko has stabilized the crack and added a couple of touches of Kintsugi to the chips, which blend beautifully into the warm tenmoku glaze. These restorations specifically allow for the teapot to still enjoy use. The original cane handle shows some wear along the top, but is in otherwise very fine shape considering this teapot is 50 years old. The sugar bowl is in perfect condition.
